I’ve been spending some time with grief lately. Not a popular emotion, but one I’ve found to be quite powerful. I do a lot of emotional healing work with people, and most of the time, underneath the anger, fear and shame is grief for something lost. It might be for a person, or an opportunity. Either way, there’s a sense of loss. It’s the unacknowledged grief that haunts us and causes sadness and depression.
This morning I followed my own advice and started writing down the losses in my life. A fallen marriage, loss of community, a wrong turn in a career path, and so on. As I put the words on paper I found a sense of relief. At last, you see.
It’s never easy to face strong emotions but bringing them out of shadow can be liberating. Acknowledging loss can be a gateway to freedom.
