Take a Breath

Was there anyone out there who felt like January was a “fresh” start? Or did it feel more like we just kept rolling from last year? Most people I talked to felt the latter. And the first thing I got when I tapped into February’s energy was “hit the ground running.” It was a feeling of already being in motion. A continuation of the fast-paced lives we’ve been living.

When Life is moving this fast, it means things are probably coming to a head soon. I don’t think that will happen until later in the year. But it’s coming. And then we’ll be able to take a breath. But for now, Life continues to pile on the stressors. Climate change, the economy, politics, etc., etc. I’m sure I don’t have to name them for you. We know them all too well!

Here’s the thing. This month we have the opportunity to breathe anyway. When marathon runners run, they can fall into a zone, a place where everything’s flowing. And that’s what I see for this month. A zone. A place just a little above our crazy day-to-day.

“How do you get to the zone?” you might ask. I’ll tell you what I got. Listen. Take moments out of your day to go within and listen to yourself. Our minds are scrambling, trying to keep up with the insane amount of input we’re exposed to. They’re trying to make senses of the incoming data. Couple that with our intuition that’s trying desperately to guide us. It’s all too much! Circuit overload!!!

This month, Life is encouraging us to take mini timeouts. Walk away from the crowds. Step into a stall in the bathroom. Close the door…and breathe. Sigh, even. Close your eyes. Go within. Take a breath. Hear the sound of your breath coming in. Hold it for a moment. Then release the breath. Hear the sound of the air leaving your body. Do this two or three times. Then – and here’s the most important part – listen. Listen to what your inner voice is saying. The first thing you hear may be a silent scream or a cry for help if you’re overwhelmed. Don’t ignore that. See it. Hear it. Then keep going. Breathe past the chaos and backlog of emotions and keep going until you find that quiet space. You may feel like you’ll never get there. We tend to feel like we have to attend to every thought and feeling and experience we have.

This month, Life is saying: Let go of a few things. Lighten your load. You can pick them up again when action Aries comes along. For now, be Pisces. (February 19-March 20). Be the fish. Swim in the quiet of the water.

Breathe deeply. Breathe calming breaths often. Bring yourself to stillness and let the chaos pass around you.

Slowing down and breathing this month is a way for us to pump the brakes on this runaway train called Life. Maybe if we each do it, we can calm things down just a bit and all catch our breaths together.
