The pattern of extremes I talked about last month continues into January. In fact, a good part of life feels like extreme living these days and will continue to amp up. This intensification is caused by pressure which is required for transformational change – and there’s no doubt we’re deep in a process of transformational change.
If you don’t believe it, just look at our country’s leader. He’s a lightning rod for change. He’s activated just about every sector of society, getting people to take a point of view, speak up, and stand for something.
The message this month is acceptance. It’s time to stop being shocked by everything – extreme weather, senseless terrorism, heartless politicians, disrespect of the earth, wealth inequality, on and on. I’m not saying we should accept their behavior. Not by a long shot. But for the sake of our nervous systems, it’s time we accept that this is the world we live in. And that’s a courageous thing to do.
But when we can see that this is what’s happening, this is the mess we created, painful as that is, we stop being surprised, and start taking responsibility. I have a client who’s going through a tough time. Choices she made in the past are catching up with her. Rather than be completely debilitated by the pain and shame of it, we talked about owning it, all of it…and then forgiving herself. You can only do what you know to do. If you knew better, you would have done it differently.
If we had known to protect our precious environment, to find something we valued more than consumerism, to take care of one another, to respect one another, if we’d known how important it was to do that, we would have. But we didn’t. And now we’re living with the mess. This month is about coming to terms with the messes we’ve created – whether they’re personal or global. Own it. Accept that you did the best you could with what you knew at the time.
The fact that you’re seeing the mess tells you you’ve grown enough to recognize it. And now that you know, it’s time to do things differently.
This month, look around. What messes are you sitting in that have caught up with you from the past? What do you know now that you didn’t know then? How would knowing that have made a difference? Then accept that you didn’t know, forgive yourself, and commit to doing it differently from here on.
